Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Creator's signature is illegible. Written from Little Rock Barracks. Asks if Hunt can look over his manuscript on organization and administration. Mentions Mr. Dudley. Discusses a proposal regarding the United States Senate (possibly related to a bill Hunt wished to introduce pertaining to his military rank at retirement). Mentions Senators James Falconer Wilson and Allison (possibly William Boyd Allison).

Hunt had served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. From 1883 until his death in 1889, he was Governor of the Soldier's Home in Washington, D.C.
