Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses his service in the British military. Mentions meeting General Afton. Relates that he was recently stationed in India. Signed across text on page one. This letter is incomplete.

Hunt had served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He was military commander at Charleston, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia 1875-1880.
