Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

(29x30 cm) Mentions Governor Young pardoning 18 anti-rent (riot) convicts as well as Generals Taylor and Scott. Discussion of Col. Benton's machinations to have himself placed above Taylor and Scott.
2. ALS. Solomon Lincoln to Francis Bassett re: death of John Quincy Adams, treaty with Mexico. Hingham, Mass. 3 p. (29x30 cm) Compares Adams's death to that of Pitt the Elder ("Chatham") and the famous painting by Copley depicting the same.
