Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Testimonial, also signed by former Confederate generals Simon B. Buckner, William J. Hardee, Jubal A. Early, and William Mahone. Signers claim "Hurtz V. [Leja?] has supplied us with spectacles which suit out eyes far better than any we have ever before used. He requires but a single glance at the eye to enable him to tell all it needs in the article of spectacles." Circa date previously inferred.
