At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Trenholm, Secretary of the Confederate Treasury, discusses the preparation and transmission of bonds from the Register. Informs Clark, Governor of Mississippi, that it will be impossible to furnish bonds smaller than $500. Written on Confederate States of America Treasury Department stationery. "The Register has been instructed to prepare the bonds, and transmit them as early as possible to Mr. Whitfield. It will not be possible, I think, to furnish any bonds of smaller denominations than $500...."
