Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to Colonel Hayes that the Major is anxious to get to Raleigh and will leave tomorrow. Hayes is to get him. Document written on a small scrap of paper, signed with initials E.P.S. Year inferred as 1863 or 1864 from Hayes's rank as Colonel, which he was promoted to from Lieutenant Colonel in October 1862.
