Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Small scrap to Colonel Hayes, signed with initials E.P.S., states "Harper in order to Raleigh. Will send the ord. & servants." Dated only the 8th, no year or month. Year could be either 1863 or 1864 based on location and Hayes rank as Colonel, which he was promoted to in October 1862. Month could be April based on similar documents (see GLC 2414.25).
