Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Advises that General Jacob Dolson Cox urges Colonel Hayes to increase scouting to obtain information. Undated except for the 8th, year inferred from location and Hayes rank as Colonel, which he was promoted to in October 1862. Possibly April based on similar documents in the collection.
