Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to General Cox, the Commander of the District in Charleston, about Lieutenant Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes's scouts. States that they have not returned due to high water. Mentions that they will probably not meet opposition at Princetown, Virginia. No news from Wyoming. In postscript, he writes "I have good information of roads, distances etc, in Green briar & Monroe [Virginia]." Year inferred from military rank.
