Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram to General Scammon reporting that he received the dispatch about the approach of Confederate General Henry Heth. Writes that a train of 90 wagons is heading out to Summersville with two companies of the 23rd Ohio regiment. Asks if they should return. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph.
