Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Instructs Lieutenant Colonel Hayes of the 23rd Ohio regiment to send out scouts to ascertain "whether the rebels are cutting a road through the timber from Anaconia Court House eastward." States that General [Jacob Dolson] Cox reports that nothing can be done until orders are received from the department. Dated only the 3rd, year inferred from Hayes rank as Lt. Colonel.
