Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram to Brigadier General Scammon of the 23rd Ohio Regiment from J.E. Thomas, Captain Commanding Post. Gives directions on a route through Kentucky. With autograph endorsement signed by Scammon commenting on the route in relation to where the Confederates might be. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Brigadier General.
