Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Clerically written note by Scammon. Scammon, as Colonel of the 23rd Ohio informs the quarter master that he sent for a role of drawing paper from General Jacob Dolson Cox and that if it is at Gauley, West Virginia to send it over. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
