Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to Major Davis, the Provost Marshall, to report that Confederate General Alfred Beckley has been arrested. Year inferred from content and from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
On 16 March 1862, General Alfred Beckley wrote a letter of surrender to Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes, after his regiment had been disbanded and he had given up his commission. He was arrested by Hayes on 3 April 1862 under orders from General John C. Fremont and taken to Wheeling, Virginia.
