Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to Bascom, the Assistant Adjutant General in Charleston, West Virginia to inform of a prisoner in Columbus. States that he referred his care to General Jacob Dolson Cox, commander of the division. Only dated the 3rd, year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
