At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly a copy in General Scammon's hand of a decoded cypher telegram to Scammon from Colonel Duval. Reports that Colonel White of the 12th Ohio infantry says that a company of Confederate troops is moving toward Gauley bridge and that another regiment of cavalry is moving toward Wayne and Cobell Counties, West Virginia. Only dated 5 November, year inferred from other documents in the collection.
