Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly a copy in General Scammon's hand of a decoded cypher telegram to Scammon from Colonel Carr Bailey White of the 12th Ohio Infantry. Gives Major Cadot's report of an ambush of the cavalry: "...two men killed and five wounded asks for surgeon two ambulances and flag truce." States that he has sent these things and reinforcements. Only dated 4 July, year inferred from similar documents in the collection.
