Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General Botsford from Colonel W. H. Powell forwarding Colonel Carr Bailey White's report on those wounded and killed in the front lines on Saturday. With autograph endorsement signed in initials by Brigadier General Scammon stating that he can send out notice to relatives of the deceased. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph.
