Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

reporting his occupation of Lewisburg. "The enemy had all passed through the town in retreat from Gen Averells who had given them a severe whipping at Droop Mountain seventeen (17) miles beyond Frankfort I had no engagement We captured the enemys Camps with tents knapsacks provisions &c also one Caisson & over a hundred of fine cattle I have sent Cavalry in pursuit - The enemy are in rapid retreat & had a good start we have some prisoners Gen Averell is now coming into the town"
