Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Jenkins was on his farm yesterday . . . some two hundred . . . of his cavalry made a dash into Barboursville last night" [As a colonel in the 8th Va. Cavalry, Alber Gallatin Jenkins wasnoted for his damaging raids on Union forces in West Virginia. He was promoted to brigadier general on August 5, 1862.]
