At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mr. Edes of Boston who came here on business of Consequence has just call'd upon me to inform he is going to [struck: Boston] set out - I am too much interested in your happiness to omit informing you that I am well and expect to receive Letters from her who is dearer to me than all the World besides in about an hour - I shall not fail to write by the post in the morning - and I most devoutly commend your to the keeping of the Father [2] [text loss] him to give us a meeting [text loss]
