Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to his wife, Lucy, in Boston. Discusses previous correspondence, including a letter from "Billey," referring to his brother William Knox. Asks Lucy to look after General St. Clair's daughter, who will be traveling to Boston, noting that the girl has "a specie of cousinship claim upon you..."

My dearest Lucy
Another Letter say you why my Harry is Letter mad - not so my Lucy, for I am Letter Weary but then to you! Why could write for ever - I thank you for the kind Letter by Colo Henley, I like it much better than the one received by the post - and yet I lik'd the one by the post exceedingly. tho I believe I was not exceedingly taken with your raillery of my Colts and the Danbury people - This last Letter of yours informs me you are at Boston I am Glad of it & I have a Letter too from Billey I am Glad of that too. I love him much, dont be jealous. I love because he is Your & my brother. because he is a good lad and has a thousand good qualities.
Genl. St. Clair [strikeout] [inserted: is] sending his daughter to Boston for her Education, I wish you to take Notice of her - she [struck: she] has a Specie of Cousin [2] ship claim upon you - and her papa & I am embark'd in the same generous cause -
