At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that this letter as an introduction and states that it will be delivered by a Mr. Gau, the Commissary at War for the Corps of Artillery. Remnants of sealing wax on the address leaf.

Williams spent most of the period from 1770 to 1785 in England and France, where he assisted his grand uncle, Benjamin Franklin, with business affairs and served as a commercial agent in Nantes, France.
