my dear friend

I wrote you at large by Capt Lillie who went from here on the 1st Instant which I hope you will receive. Mr Cato [Bradip] who for some time past has been as an hired servant to Mrs Knox has gone from us - he was too knowing to be kept longer. I wish therefore that you would be so kind as to engage a servant black or white of the following description - rather small in stature, understands how to take care of horses and can ride [illegible] - a good cook - honest - and willing to do any thing he may be let about. his Wages shall be from 24 to 30 pounds hard money a year or its equivalent and a suit of clothes a year - if you can find such a one pray bring him with you if convenient we hope to see you by [the 1st or 10th] February -
Official accounts have arrivd of the affair of Tarleton & Sumpter, by which it appears that Sumpter beat Tarleton, kill line 92 and wounded 100 -
Lt Colo Washington of our horse with 9 men took 10 in a log house.
I am my Dear Brother
Your affectionate
