At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at Verplank's Point, near present-day Verplanck. Contains two notes; the first, signed by Lieutenant D. N. Lane is directed to General Knox, requesting Delany's discharge. The second note, written and signed 26 June 1781 by Samuel Shaw, grants Delany an honorable discharge. Shaw writes on order of General Knox.
