Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed. Certificate to pay Thomas Lloyd Halsey, a shipping merchant and French consular agent, for providing supplies to General Rochambeau's army. Note in English on verso signed by Halsey states: "Pay the contents to Mr. William Knox on order."

Halsey was a business partner of Jeremiah Wadsworth, a merchant who procured supplies for Rochambeau's army.
