Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written for Knox by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide. Encloses an order from Timothy Pickering, Quartermaster General (order not included). Discusses a wagon which is to be sent to Kings Ferry, New York. Is glad to hear Mott has regained his health. Written at Philipsburgh, New York (present-day Sleepy Hollow).
