Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, "General [Henry] Knox transmitted the report of the Court of Inquiry on LC Barber, as well for his Excellency's decision as for its being published to the army; he not thinking himself authorized to decide in this case it having been designated by Genl [William] Heath, then commanding in the Department."

Lieutenant Colonel Barber might be Isaac R. Barber (fl. 1782) of the 3rd Continental Artillery.
