Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, "I take this opportunity and the Fredom of Wrighting to your Honor by Lt Peninton not doubting that you Will do me that justis that is Due to me that is that you will Be so kind as to send me a Sotificate to Sertifye that I Did inlist [4]7 Men in the Core of Atillery in the year 1776-7 Which your Honor Well knows is true and I Do declaire that I Never have Recd one farthing but what I Recd from your Honer; if you would be so good as to Send me a sertificate of What is Wright I Shall for Ever Remain yor Hmb Srvt."
