At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain J. Reed of the 2nd Regiment of Artillery writes, "In visiting the several posts & Park of Artillery on the Point, I find the State of the Ordnance to be much the same as mentioned in my Particular report of the 24th ulto. A few men are wanting to clear the snow of the different platforms."

Captain J. Reed might be Jacob Reed Jr. (1755-1838) or John Reed (1759-1797).
