I have the honour to enclose a letter I just recd. from Genl. Gates, in my answer I have informed him that the [ready] to ...oblige him in every thing in my power I could no futher comply than by applying to you for permission Elisha Davis to return to him, which I not take the liberty to do I be you will do me the justice to believe me with respect.
