At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

I have the honour to enclose a letter I just recd. from Genl. Gates, in my answer I have informed him that the [ready] to oblige him in every thing in my power I could no futher comply than by applying to you for permission Elisha Davis to return to him, which I not take the liberty to do I be you will do me the justice to believe me with respect.
