Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests six days of rations for Major Sauvant, a member of the sappers and engineers. Signed by Captain Joseph C. Dellezenn and countersigned by Major General Knox's aide-de-camp, Major Samuel Shaw. A note made by Shaw says the rations are "To be charged to Capt. Delezenn." Docket signed by Paul Benny, using an "x" for his mark. Document is in Dellezenn's hand.
