At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Return for rations for one member of the engineering department beginning 9 April and ending 17 April. It appears that the person came from the 8 Massachusetts Regiment. A total of 12 rations were issued over the eight days. Signed by Superintendent Joseph Cheesman and countersigned by Lillie as an aide-de-camp. Docket signed by a Jacob Wight stating that contractors delivered the rations.
