At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Enclosed is a letter from Colonel Sprout of this day containing information of the extraordinary conduct of a Mr Honniwell. If upon enquiring the facts should appear as stated to Colonel Sprout, The Justice and dignity of America are deeply concerned that such an atrocious violation of the Laws of Nations should be punished with exemplary rigor
