Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed for Henry Knox by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Discusses a problem with Drury's account, in which the Paymaster, Charles Knowles, states that he overpaid Drury. In order to verify the state of the account, Knox asks Drury to provide vouchers for all of his balances and transactions.
