Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written, signed, and docketed for General Henry Knox by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Commands Cogswell to join the brigade on its march to Philadelphia. Instructs him to move expeditiously and take the route via Kingwood, Pompton, Morristown, Somerset Court House, Princeton, Trenton, and Bristol. Provides further marching instructions including where to draw provisions.
