Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed by General Knox's aide-de-camp Samuel Shaw. Thomas Clews, of the Corps of Invalids, is given 107 complete rations by order of General Knox. A note of receipt from the contractors for the states of New York and New Jersey is included on the docket.
