Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Major General Knox to Lieutenant Colonel Antill. Encloses a return for provisions for his family (not included here). Apologizes for initially giving him conditional paperwork, but says he was unfamiliar with the resolve of Congress which ordered the provisions issued. Says "I have understood there is now authority for that purpose."
