Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp but endorsed and signed by Assistant Clothier General David Brooks. A document certifying that General Knox has accounted for articles of clothing received for the Corps of Artillery from December 1776 to July 1783 (though the date of the last clothing entry is November 1778). Indicates duplicate (see GLC02437.02264).
