Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders rations to be issued for the use of five Indians going from Newburgh to Albany. The rations included 60 pounds of bread and 60 pounds of beef and also one gallon of rum as directed by Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Walker, an aide-de-camp to General Washington. A Thomas [Hind] signed the second page, stating that contractors delivered the rations.
