Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

List of troops mustered in the Northern Army in August 1783. The list is divided between infantry and artillery and subdivided by rank. In the infantry there were 159 officers, 430 non-commissioned officers, and 2,864 privates. In the artillery there were 35 officers, 52 non-commissioned officers, and 245 privates. Signed by Major Barber, who was a member of General Horatio Gates's staff.
