Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written and signed for Knox by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Copy of a receipt for the disposal of 100 suits of clothing to the corps of artillery at Middlebrook, New Jersey on 2 July 1777. The clothing was sent from Philadelphia. The suits included coats, vests, breeches, stockings, shoes, and hats. The suits were issued to the companies of Captains Bauman, Doughty, Drury, Lillie, and Wool.
