Informs Knox of the wastefulness of the guard and servants who are watching over General William Howe's quarters.
Newburgh Novr. 1. 1783.
D.r Sir,
Gen.l Howe left at his quarters a guard, and a number of servants; and for aught that appears, they are likely to remain there all winter. Mr. Brewster has just told me that among them they keep five fires burning; which is abominable. Capt. Haskell I suppose is at the Point: I with he, as an aid to Gen.l Howe, would undertake to lodge the baggage somewhere, that the guard might be removed. If you think proper, I wish you to speak to Capt. Haskell on the subject.
I am Dear sir,
Yr. most obed. Servt.
T. Pickering
Q.M.G.
M General Knox

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
