Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pickering, Quartermaster General, transmits a certified copy of a receipt related to Captain [Coggeshall's] and a delivery of cannon to Colonel Cobb. In a post script, asks about medicines to be sent to New York for sale. Asks if Doctor [John] Cochran is in office (at West Point).

Cochran was head of the army's Medical Department.

As you gave me the original receipt of Capt. Coggeshall for the cannon delivered for Col. Cobb, I think proper to transmit you a certified copy thereof, & of your order for Col. Cobb to settle with me for the same. The copy is inclosed.
