Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Replies to a letter from Captain Bryant, at Springfield, Massachusetts (refer to GLC02437.2965). Responds to issues Bryant reported: a break-in on the property of Captain Pynchon, and Bryant's lack of pay. Agrees to help Bryant obtain pay, and gives him advice as to collect money for a previously unpaid account.
