Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to Knox in French asking if he will send him an excerpt of a letter written by the Marquis de Lafayette regarding his trip to Prussia. Says everyone has interest in the place where they spent the springtime of their lives. Promises not to use it except to satisfy his curiosity. Sends regard to Mrs. Knox.
