Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notes on payment of officers' travelling expenses: "Treasury department when removed in 1785 from Philadelphia to New York any charges including travelling expenses." Refers to an ordinance on the subject from 7 May 1787. Verso includes a note that Asa Copeland and Richard Frothingham, as conductors/commissaries during the war, "have been allow'd their travelling expences whilst after stores."
