Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Winslow informs his cousin of the difficulty he has had in obtaining a confirmation of the Muscongus (Waldo) Patent. Writes that he and his brother have been corresponding with Henry Knox, and they trust him with the business of their deceased aunt's estate.

Hannah Flucker was a sister of Lucy Knox. She married for the first time to James Urquhart circa 1774, and then was divorced. She married a second time, to Richard Harwood, circa 1788.
