At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses a warrant on Nathaniel Appleton, receiver of the Continental Taxes for the State of Massachusetts, for security for a loan from the Massachusetts Bank. The loan was used to be used to pay two companies of federal artillery ordered to protect the arsenal at Springfield, Massachusetts. The inclosed Warrant on Nathl. Appleton Esqr (Receiver of the Continental Taxes for the State of Massachusetts) to the amount of two thousand, four hundred & sixty three dollars, is proposed as Security to the Massachusetts Bank, for the Loan of five hundred dollars, for the use of the Public, and for the express purpose of paying and marching the [two] Companies of Federal Artillery to Springfield, for the Security and Protection of the Federal Arsenal at that place.
