At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written to "P.J." Van Berckel, likely Pieter Johan Van Berckel. Replies to Van Berckel's letter from 9 May, in which he recommended Joseph Mandrillon for membership in the Society of the Cincinnati. Regrets that the Society's rules "did not permit to associate so worthy a character." Refer to GLC02437.03566 for Knox's letter to Mandrillon.

Van Berckel served as the first Dutch ambassador to the United States (1783-1788).

Sir,
I had the honor to receive your Excellency's letter of the 9th ultimo stating the merits of Mr. Mandrillon of Amsterdam and his desire to be admitted into the Society of the Cincinnati
Immediately on the General Meeting assembling I submitted to them your excellency's letter on the subject of Mr. Mandrillon and also a letter from himself to the President and a memorial to the Society dated the 24th of October 1786
The General Meeting were highly sensible of the zeal affection and talents exhibited by Mr. Mandrillon in the cause of America and deeply regretted [2] that the rules of their Society did not permit to associate so worth a character
I beg the favor of your patronage to the enclosed letter to Mr. Mandrillon
